Advocate letter #2: Congress – Budget Proposal for fiscal year 2026

Dear [Senator/Representative] [Last Name],

As your one of your constituents, I respectfully urge you to maintain the existing slaughter ban for America’s wild horses and burros. These iconic animals are a living symbol of our national heritage, and they deserve humane protection—not to be destroyed or sold into commercial slaughter.

Specifically, I ask that you:

  1. Prohibit any destruction of healthy wild horses and burros and uphold the ban on their sale for slaughter.
  2. Block any transfers to other agencies, organizations, individuals, or foreign governments that could lead to their exploitation for profit or slaughter.
  3. Reject any proposals, including those recommended by Project 2025, that would give the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) broad authority to “dispose of excess wild horses.” This language is dangerously vague and opens the door to inhumane treatment and commercial slaughter of these federally protected animals.

The American people overwhelmingly support the humane treatment of wild horses and burros on public lands. Rather than expanding destructive policies, Congress should invest in responsible, non-lethal population management methods such as fertility control and adoption programs.

Please act to ensure that our wild horses and burros are protected, not betrayed.

Thank you for your time and your attention to this urgent matter.
