Advocate letter: Congress – Budget Proposal for fiscal year 2026

Subject: Please Maintain the Ban on Slaughter of America’s Wild Horses and Burros

Dear [Senator/Representative] [Last Name],

I am writing to respectfully urge you to maintain the existing ban on the slaughter of America’s wild horses and burros. No matter which side of the political spectrum you’re on, slaughtering 70,000+ wild horses in holding will be controversial and unpopular with the majority of Americans.

In 1971, Congress passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act with overwhelming bipartisan support, ensuring their protection from capture, branding, harassment, and slaughter forever.

Lifting the current slaughter ban would undermine both the letter and the spirit of that landmark legislation. It would betray the public trust and the national values that led to their federal protection over 50 years ago.

The American people continue to overwhelmingly support the humane treatment of wild horses and burros on public lands. Rather than expanding destructive policies, Congress should invest in responsible, non-lethal population management methods such as fertility control and adoption programs.
